As the war against recession bites even deeper it is now imperative that your leaders have transitioned from a peacetime style of leadership to that of WARTIME!
Are your managers and leaders up for the fight? Do they have the right ammunition and firepower to fight the apathy and inertia caused in your workers by the fear and insecurity brought on by the constant news of this recession? Can they rouse your high performers to peak performance and eradicate the poor performance of those who don’t perform?
Who knows when this recession will end? It is generally agreed that when it does we are likely to see slower growth and not the boom times of previous years. In the long term this is probably a good thing.
BUT WHAT ABOUT YOUR IMMEDIATE SURVIVAL?
Hopefully you have acted quickly and are now operating lean and with reduced overhead. But what of the morale of your people remaining? They have seen their friends lose their jobs, their bonuses cut or frozen, no pay rises and even pay cuts, terms and conditions slashed, overtime banned and jobs put constantly at risk!
And now you want them to work harder than ever before!!!
You need your Winston Churchills to show themselves. Never before has it been so important that the leadership within your organisation step up to the mark and lead your troops into battle.
Remember too that you will need your people to be energised, committed, skilled and poised to help your organisation flourish in the recovery!
Look at your leadership from supervisors to directors. Are they up to scratch? Look at the list of wartime leadership traits below. Do they have enough of them?
- DECISIVE – Can they stay calm and focused and be able to make good decisions both now and for the Future?
- VISIONARY - Can they see a clear and simple way forward for your organisation?
- AGILE – Are they able to constantly revise as the environment is constantly changing?
- INSPIRATIONAL – Can they give your people the desire and ability to exceed expectations?
- SENSITIVE & FIRM - Can they keep good employees happy and get rid of the poor ones quickly?
- ELOQUENT – Can your people feel their touch? This can’t be done by email!!
- COURAGEOUS – Do they lead from the front?
- TENACIOUS - Do your people have confidence and will never give up?
