We all have periods in our lives where we feel down and disillusioned. It can become a spiral into depression at worst or at best a hard clamber out of the hole.
At these times in our lives it can be easy to assume that 99% of the events we experience are negative. My mum once said this simple sentence to me and it’s been a wonderful influence on my life – “Something wonderful could happen at any minute”. It’s so simple. Is there any statistical evidence that more negative than positive events occur? I don’t think so. This leads me to consider that it’s not actually the event which causes the feelings of disappointment or disillusion, but it’s our response to those events. In other words, it’s not what happens that makes us feel a certain way. We have a choice in how we react to the events that happen around us.
For me life happens in our heads, and much of our thinking time can be spent anticipating our futures. To some this is known as ‘worry’ and to others it might be optimism or hope. I find the emotional state of optimism and hope infinitely preferable to that of worry. Believing that the possibility of something wonderful happening is just as likely as the possibility of something awful happening brings about the feelings of optimism and hope.
It’s all about deciding what to expect.
Expecting good things to happen is a wonderful feeling which can be induced with a mix of practice and self discipline. The key is to make it a habit and not to succumb to the pressures of society to focus on the negative.
Always remember that negativity is highly infectious but it’s just as likely that “Something Wonderful Could Happen at Any Minute”
